3. History And Facts Of Buangkok MRT Station
Decades ago, the site of Buangkok MRT Station was a forested area. After the government gave the green light for the construction of the North East Line in January 1996, the forest was cleared and the surrounding vacated warehouses demolished.
The joint venture of Sato Kogyo and Hock Lian Seng Engineering was awarded the contract for the construction of both Sengkang and Buangkok MRT stations. The contract was worth $166.4 million, inclusive of the construction of tunnels linking the two stations as well as tunnels to Sengkang Depot. A depth of around 20 metres was dug at the site and the “open-cut-bottom-up” technique was employed to build the station.
Buangkok MRT Station was slated to serve a new residential town in the future and plans were made for the development of the surrounding area. Roads were then constructed to link this station with existing roads.
Residents looked forward to the opening of this station as North East Line commenced service in 2003. However, they were left disappointed when SBS Transit announced the decision to keep this station, along with Woodleigh MRT Station, closed. This decision was justified by the low ridership which would result in massive operating losses.
The plan was to open Buangkok MRT Station only in 2006 when more residents moved into the new flats in the area. Today, ridership is much higher with the surrounding BTO flats occupied by communities with a good mix of demographics, including young families.
Do you know that Buangkok MRT Station is unique in its own way? Unlike the other stations along the North East Line, the entrances of this station do not feature glass in the design – rather, the entrances are enveloped by white Teflon sheets supported by metal frames. This station is also designated as a Civil Defence shelter to accommodate at least 7500 people.
4. Interior Of Buangkok MRT Station

Titled “Water, Nature And Contemporary”, the exuberant artwork in the interior of Buangkok MRT Station is created by Vincent Leow. This work of art reflects the vitality of Buangkok New Town and the optimism of its residents. The work consists of a selection of images and archival photos of life in Singapore treated in Vincent Leow’s singular style.

Monochrome photos such as those of school children and traffic police give an idea of the routines of everyday life but with a creative twist as the artist gives new meaning to these images by embellishing them with bands, dots and graphic motifs in bold primary colours. Familiar illustrations such as the fish are also employed to make an emotional connection with his audience given its auspicious symbolism.
Placed at eye level with commuters as they travel up and down the escalators, the works add colour and life to Buangkok MRT Station, in addition to echoing the town’s past and celebrating its present.
5. Exterior And Surroundings Of Buangkok MRT Station
Bicycle parking facilities are available just outside the station at Exit B.

Amenities are plentiful both at the station exterior as well as at the surrounding blocks. Education centres, clinics, NTUC Supermarket and even a Starbucks are available as soon as you exit the station from Exit B. A variety of neighbourhood retail shops can also be found there.

The most exciting development in the Sengkang Central area is undoubtedly Sengkang Grand Mall, adding to the vitality of the region surrounding Buangkok MRT Station.

The opening of Sengkang Grand Mall is a highly anticipated one. As the first integrated project in the North East region of Singapore, this development boasts a three-level retail component, a hawker centre, a community centre as well as private residential units above the mall. This mall is at the doorstep of Buangkok MRT Station, allowing superb accessibility to residents of surrounding towns.
Residents can now enjoy a plethora of retail and dining options, with more than over 90 brands offered such as Bata, Uniqlo, Old Chang Kee, Sanook Kitchen, Yole and so many more!
